Gerlis Ceramics est. 2013 specializes in handcrafted contemporary tableware is based in Penang, Malaysia.
If you ever wonder what is the meaning behind "Gerlis", well it is a Malay terminology for Glaze.
The studio is located in the country side of Penang, Balik Pulau where it comprises of a workshop space and a spacious gallery for visitors to tour around and shop their handmade ceramics produced.
Here in Gerlis, we take pride in formulating our very own glaze recipe, hence the name Gerlis ;) We have been experimenting with varieties of mixture and formulation to create finishing to the final product such as matte, glossy or with textured finish.
The identity of Gerlis lies in our Signature Beads Glaze which took us about 5 years of R&D to develop the perfect recipe and get the unique beads effect. Each beads placement or formation is non-intentional and full of suprises.
Each piece of ceramics is handcrafted and undergone two stages of firing process which takes a total of 20 hours in the kiln. All products were fired at a high temperature between 1250 - 1280 degree celsius. Thus making them durable for microwave/ oven and dishwasher use as well.
Dr Shamsu Mohamad

Dr Shamsu Mohamad started his journey in ceramics back in 1983 when he pursue degree in Arts & Design at Institut Teknologi Mara (ITM), Shah Alam. In 1997 he then receives Masters degree in Industrial Design from Central St Martin, London.
Upon returning to Malaysia, he has served as an art lecturer for 27 years - around 10 years in Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) and over 17 years in Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Throughout his career as an academician, he was won multiple awards for research in regards to Arts and Nature.
He completed his Doctorate Degree study (PhD) in 2013 from (USM) with research on Singgora (house roof made of clay).
He has officially retired as an academician in 2022 and began his life as a full-time ceramic designer.
